Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Tuesday
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Councilman Bernard Parks and members of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission will hold a news conference to discuss an upcoming presentation to the National Football League. This comes on the heels of reports that the NFL is not only considering bringing one football team to the Memorial Coliseum, but two.Former Riordan staffer Alexander Rosas announced Monday night his candidacy for the Alhambra City Council. Rosas worked in a number of capacities promoting economic development in Los Angeles over the least decade.
Brian Center is a Democrat running for the 44th State Assembly District. The 44th covers chunks of San Gabriel Valley including Pasadena and Monrovia, as well as parts of Northeast Los Angeles. The seat is currently held by the termed out Carol Liu. Center has a very well done website and has a feature that has intrigued this old, dead Republican Mayor: Top 10 Reasons Government Is Off Center. Alex Rosas is one of the nicest guys around. Good for him!
Good luck on Brian ending those per diems. How is Stewart going to eat in 2009?
Brian has a nice idea to cut out per diems, but hey why stop there. I say we cut their staff in half too. We'd save the 100s of thousands spent on salaries and give our "representative" a little more to do the 8 months out of the year they theoretically work in Sacramento.
We should also go back to part time legislature.
Adam Murray is the best bet for strong progressive leadership in the 44th. Check out www.Murray2006.com for Adam's common sense solutions.
For the genius who suggests we go back to a part-time legislature, I have one word: Mississippi. Let's consider the fact that they're ruling the POOREST state in the nation on a part-time basis. Now compare that with running the 4th (or arguably 5th) largest economy in THE WORLD on a part-time basis. I believe you'll see that you'd have to be a complete idiot to think that would be a good idea here, since so far it's not a good idea anywhere in the United States. Maybe the real problem is we have full-time stupid people who are incapable of running a neighborhood council let alone the state of California
Seeing that California is only one spot behind Mississippi, it couldn't hurt.
Don't show up for work on May 1, 2006. I have an employee who asked me about this. I asked him if he knew what we call employees who don't show up on May 1st? He said, I don't know. I said I'll give you hint by using initials. They are called "Former Employees", but whatever decision you make, it should be something that will change the remainder of your life in a positve way. He compassionately asked me if I could assist him in making an informed decision, and to do the right thing. I compassionately told him I look forward to seeing him on Monday Morning, and that perhaps we could share a cup of coffee and talk about various issues that involve both of us, and I then let him know that if he wasn't there by 8:30 a.m with the coffee mate, that he could go fuck himself and that I would be so angry I will pay his replacement 30% more than he would have ever received in raises if he had stayed another 20 years. I also told him Pancho Villa wants to impregnate his sister and push his wheelchair ridden Mom over the hillside to check the sprinkler heads. I think we understand each other now.

Which would you rather have? 53 new teachers or a per-diem for politicians? The per diem elimination idea shows what can happen when you look at the business as usual in Sacramento from a citizen's perspective instead of as a career pol. If that was only #10, I'm eagerly awaiting seeing Center's other ideas. -R
So if I get this right, at a minimium legistators are being paid $111,000 (salary) + 19,320 (per diem) + 4,800 (car allowance) = $135,120! That is insane. What the hell are we paying them so much for?
The executive director of a small to mid-sized non-profit is lucky to make $80,000 after 15 years of service.
Maybe, if we paid legistators less money we would get people more interested in getting things done than making as much money as they can.
I am glad that someone is a least talking about this.
